Making the most of a poor photo ?

planet-hong-kong-2 The weather for the first few days of our trip to Hong Kong was rather grey and gloomy, and very hazy …..not the best for taking photos. Just like last year’s visit in fact 😦

The weather did improve for the last couple of days, again just like last year !

Most of the photos that I did take over the first few days needed work, such as the last two monochrome conversions I posted here and here. Just for a change I tried something new, turning the above photo of Hong Kong island into the “planet” below using Photoshop’s “polar co-ordinates” filter and then the ‘path blur’ filter.

Hong Kong 2016 – the urban landscape.

hongkong_mono-3lippo-1

If given the right weather conditions with some broken cloud and some wind, and armed with tripod and Big Stopper ND filter then Hong Kong would be a great place for architectural photography ….unfortunately we just had grey overcast conditions with no wind.

Especially on Hong Kong Island there are many unique buildings such as the Lippo Building left and above, or as it is sometimes called the “koala bear building” because the design resembles koala bears climbing it ….well, maybe to homesick Aussie expats perhaps.

Luckily the weather improved for the last few days of our stay as my girlfriend, a devout Buddhist, wanted to see some of the temples scattered around Hong Kong and if you have ever seen a Chinese temple you will know that they can be very colourful and certainly look better when the sun is shining so the next post will be a lot brighter !

The grey skies did not matter after dark though, when the buildings put on their glad-rags and neon robes for the nightly light show :lightshow-1.jpg

Have a nice day

lk-1

lk-2 Well, would n’t you be having a nice day if you were driving around in a Lamborghini ?

I had read somewhere that Hong Kong has the highest ownership of Rolls-Royces per capita which is understandable, but I cannot understand the number of high performance sports cars that I have seen here in only 2 days.

porsche-1I saw this yellow Porsche while walking to dinner near our guesthouse on the first evening and tried to explain to the GF why it would be wasted here, and then saw 2 more Porsches in the next 50 metres ! Why would you want to buy such  a high performance car to putter along on the traffic choked streets of Hong Kong ?

For the “look at me” pose value  perhaps, but for me that would be outweighed by the frustration of not being able to get it into top gear !

Surrounded by temptations

photofair-6

No, not that sort of temptations !

photofair-4

This sort of temptation, at the Bangkok PhotoFair 2016. I went out to the BITEC exhibition centre today just for a look and something to do, I was not planning on buying anything except perhaps a memory card or two for our trip to Hong Kong tomorrow, as I do plan on taking lots of photos !

But just in case I weakened the GF came along to keep me in restraint, although she soon got bored and sore feet.             “OK dear, go and have a coffee while I look around”

When I win the lottery perhaps I could afford 1.47 million baht for a Hasselblad camera, until then I will stick to mere Nikons….I wonder how many they sell at that price ?

I was looking for anybody that might sell motorised sliders for timelapse photography, more out of idle interest than any serious thoughts of buying one, but none were to be seen. The busiest stalls were a couple that were selling framed pictures of the late King, others were busy but not crowded.

This was one of the busiest :

I wonder why ?

Anyway, time to pack for our Hong Kong trip…..see ya.
