Phi Phi Island

As I mentioned some weeks ago I was headed to Ko Phi Phi (pronounced as kaw pee pee)for a week on the beach, I’ve finally got around to writing a blog about it. I first went there around 20 years ago in the early 1990’s when it was truly a tropical paradise where you could stay in a bamboo hut on the beach for 50 baht (less than $2) if my memory serves me well. That was long before it was discovered by Hollywood and Leonardo di Caprio and made famous as The Beach.

It is east of Phuket, between Phuket and Krabi, just over an hour ferry ride from either. In my younger days I took an overnight bus from Bangkok  but nowadays I prefer a bit more comfort, and why not when you can get a cheap combined flight/airport to pier transfer/ferry ticket through Nok Air for about 2400 baht each way. Praise be to “Low Cost Carriers’ like Nok Air and Air Asia. Not like the so-called budget airlines back home ! Another plus for living in Thailand Smile

I had not been back for some time, since before the Boxing Day tsunami which devastated the island (and many other places). I had heard many horror stories about the island since it became famous, about how it was so crowded, so over developed, so expensive, so I did have mixed feelings about going back. Sometimes it is best to let those perfect memories stay as memories and not be spoilt by today’s realities.

Ok, so those 50 baht huts had been replaced by 5000 baht/night villas but there were still plenty of cheap places to stay off the beach. I easily found a 600 baht room, with free Wifi, cold showers and a comfortable bed in town. While it seemed a long way from the beach at first, it was only because the lanes through town zigzag everywhere and once I found the shortest route it only took a few minutes to walk to the beach. Mind you, then it was a bit of a hike along the coast to the best snorkelling spot at Shark Point, Long Beach.

DSC_8105 Absolutely everything has to be shipped over from the mainland so it is not surprising that prices for meals and drinks are a bit expensive (by Thai standards). A 20baht can of drink in Bangkok cost 40 baht in town, 50 baht at a Long Beach resort, which I think is reasonable….although the small bar halfway between town and Long Beach which wanted 75 baht for the same can of Coke did not get my business !

It was only the start of the high season, but it certainly did not feel overcrowded at that time. Perhaps a couple of weeks later things would be different ? Or perhaps it was that all the young backpackers partied all night and did not surface until afternoon ? Come evening and they would be staggering around town again, clutching bottles of Chang or buckets of cocktails and spirits….the ugly side of tourism.

Buckets of booze

Buckets of booze

Ko Phi Phi is a Muslim island, many restaurants don’t serve alcohol, some guesthouses do not allow alcohol on the premises, it has a mosque but no Buddhist wat, and in my visits all those years ago people tried to be conscious of the locals feelings but not nowadays. It might be a holiday resort, but girls, would it hurt to put a sarong and t-shirt on instead of traipsing through town in a teeny weeny bikini even at night ? And guys, cover up that beer belly please ? (OK, rant over)

Apart from my normal camera I had a loan of an underwater Nikon AW1 and  GoPro cameras ( more about them in this post ) so I had some fun with them in the water. I took quite a few videos with them that I am trying to edit into something watchable, but for now here are some photos:

I might go back again next year, around March after high season has finished. You can island-hop by ferry all the way from Phuket to Langkawi via many islands, coming back to the mainland at Georgetown, Penang in Malaysia. That would certainly beat taking the bus !

Happy Birthday, Your Majesty ……(and me)

KB-16

Yesterday was a big day in Thailand, mainly because it was the King’s Birthday, and because he is regarded as the father of the country it is also Father’s Day, Mother’s Day falling on the Queen’s Birthday. I think even the most fervent royalist in England would find it hard to imagine the regard with which the King is held here, and his birthday is celebrated here like a royal wedding is in England. Every home and business would have at least one picture of him hanging on the wall.

He is 87 now, and public appearances are rare because of ill health, his audience yesterday was cancelled but that did not stop Thais turning out in droves around Ratchadamnoen Avenue (the Royal Avenue) yesterday to see the Crown Prince, and the thousands of fairy lights decorating the street. I went over to Khao San Road (the legendary backpacker area) nearby to see a friend over here on holiday and unexpectedly got caught in the middle of it ….luckily I had my camera with me, but not the best lens for night photography so I had to push the ISO way up.

KB-4 One end of Khao San Road was closed off, with a stage and a classical Thai dance show and music sponsored by local businesses, while it was business as usual down the road including the sale of alcohol, which is supposed to be banned out of respect for the King, but widely ignored nowadays it seems (but not at the On Nut market where my local bar was closed Sad smile ) Although instead of showing the usual EPL football or videos every bar was showing the official ceremony from Sanam Luang, near the Grand Palace.

KB-11 In Thailand every day of the week has a colour associated with it. Yellow is regarded as the King’s colour because he was born on a Monday, it used to be common for Thais to wear a yellow shirt every Monday until the colour coded political troubles of recent years when yellow became the colour of the PAD “yellow shirts” who closed down the airport a few years ago. This time last year the PDRC were protesting in the streets so I think there were less people prepared to wear yellow for the King’s birthday last year, but this year they were out dressed in yellow as usual.

After the official ceremonies it was time to light candles and pray for His Majesty, and then the fireworks.

On a much less important note to most people here in Thailand, it was also my birthday yesterday. Yes, I made it to the big six-o … sixty years old Smile. Not that it really means much to me, but it’s better than the alternative of not making it to 60, is n’t it ?

Hopefully there are still lots of birthdays to come !

A sea of saffron and white

Yesterday I was dragged out of bed at 0 dark hundred, in other words w-a-a-a-y before dawn, to go downtown to CentralWorld mall where there was to be an alms giving to 10,000 monks.

Monks arriving way before dawn.

Monks arriving way before dawn.

Normally the monks go around their neighbourhood receiving alms from the local residents but sometimes these events are held by companies to gain merit. I found it a bit ironic that this was being held outside one of Bangkok’s major temples of mass commercialism, complete with Christmas/New Year decorations and a large beer garden, but maybe I’m just getting cynical in my old age ……

I let my friend go and give alms by herself, citing an inability to sit cross legged for 2 hours during the service due to old age. Apart from that, I did n’t have any white trousers to wear, and I would rather take photos of the event.

An old cynic I may be, but I must admit I found it rather moving to hear 10,000 monks and perhaps 50,000 or more other people chanting during the service. If I’ve understood it right, they were chanting the Eight Precepts, which is the Buddhist version of the 10 Commandments.

For those who know Bangkok, the ceremony took up all of the road between Ploenchit and Petchaburi roads, about 500 metres long so that’s a lot of people.

I’m off down south to the islands tomorrow, so hopefully lots of photos of palm trees, sandy beaches and blue skies Smile I’ve borrowed a friend’s brand new GoPro 4 to take as well as my camera so that should be fun. Unfortunately it’s only a one week trip, but that’s better than nothing !

Muay Thai @ MBK

MBK19dec2014-8 After a couple of false starts, it seems that the cool, dry season is finally here in Bangkok. That means the return of outdoor beer gardens, a pleasant night’s sleep without the air-con, and the return of the Muay Thai fights at MBK shopping centre.

So I ventured downtown last night to get a few photos, but half an hour before the first fight there was already a good crowd there and I had to wait a while before sneaking into a good spot 😦

Anyway, here are a few of the ones I did manage to get:

Genuine made in Thailand boomerangs …

Chatuchak market here in Bangkok, Thailand is supposedly one of the biggest markets in the world, where you can find all sorts of stuff. One thing I was not expecting to find there the other day were boomerangs !

DSC_7668
Yes, boomerangs complete with Australian Aboriginal style artwork. Somehow I doubt they are the real thing ?
