Star trails

Boulia shire, way, way out in western Queensland has a tourist motto :
wide open horizons, magical night skies

night skies, outback Queensland

night skies, outback Queensland

For once, it’s not an exaggeration.
As Banjo Paterson wrote in “Clancy of The Overflow”:
And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended,
And at night the wond’rous glory of the everlasting stars.

Banjo Paterson spent a lot of time in this area, Waltzing Matilda was of course written by him after a visit to nearby Dagworth Station, so he knew what he was talking about when he wrote “Clancy”.

Richard and Soph from morgansafari asked me about the settings for night exposures, so the technical stuff :
photo 1 35 minutes at f/4.5, ISO 320
photo 2 27 minutes at f/6.3, ISO 640
Both taken at 18mm, second photo cleaned up with Topez denoise because of the higher ISO.

I love the way your photos (especially the first one) form bigger and bigger circles around the pole star. Also, the different colors of the trails are fantastic!
