Hong Kong part 2, the urban landscape.

Hong Kong has some eye catching skyscrapers, and I wanted to try my hand at a bit of urban landscape photography while I was there. I had packed my tripod and Big Stopper filter, hoping for some good clouds to get some dramatic long exposure skies. But as I mentioned in part one, it was overcast nearly all the time, with dull, dreary, featureless skies.

OK, on to plan B …make the most of it ! And get some help from Lightroom and Photoshop when I returned home.

hongkong_blog-5

Speaking of Photoshop ….you may have seen some photos of the nightly “symphony of stars lightshow” with numerous laser beams projected from skyscraper rooftops ? needless to say they have usually been photoshopped to add in extra light beams. The reality is not quite so spectacular, with only a few beams at any one time. It’s still worth seeing though, and the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront esplanade is packed with locals and tourists every evening, so go early if you want to set up a tripod !

Seasons Greetings writ large and bright. Without photoshopped light beams!

Hong Kong

Well, I had better write something about my trip to Hong Kong before I forget…….

hongkong_blog-32

It had been on my must visit list for years so I finally got around to getting the air ticket and ticking it off. Surprisingly, Thai International had cheaper fares than Air Asia or any of the other budget airlines. The flight to Hong Kong was full, but on the return trip the plane was almost empty and they offered myself and a few other frequent flyer members an upgrade to the business class …bonus !

I am unashamedly a “cheap charlie” when it comes to accommodation, all I need is a comfortable bed and a secure place to leave my bag, I’ve no need for infinity pools, spas and 101 cable tv channels so I booked in to the Jas guesthouse through Agoda, and was pleasantly surprised. The room was small, but then it is Hong Kong where all hotel rooms are small, but the bed was comfortable, room was secure and came with aircon, free wifi, and cable tv …not bad for a backpacker place. It is also right next to the Tsim Sha Tsui railway station and an airport bus stop which made it very convenient to get to.

hongkong_blog-1 I have to say that Hong Kong’s public transport has to be experienced to believe just how good it is. One stored value “Octopus “ card to use on all forms of transport, which are clean, fast, frequent and airconditioned (well, apart from the Star Ferry ) and connect seamlessly.

Hong Kong is of course known as a shopper’s paradise and although I was there mainly for sight-seeing I could n’t help looking through the camera stores. Camera gear here in Bangkok is not particularly cheap, but Hong Kong did n’t seem to offer any bargains and the range on show was pretty limited too. The shops had most of the manufacturers’ range, but very little after-market stuff. I was hoping to find a particular GPS logger for my camera which is made by a Hong Kong company but nobody had even heard of it.

The temple of Apple

The temple of Apple

There is a huge Apple store in one of the glitziest malls, 2 floors of i-stuff which was packed whenever I went past it. And all the fancy luxury brand names were there of course, the city reeks of money.

Temple Street night market ...souvenir central!

Temple Street night market …souvenir central!

Here in Bangkok the street markets are actually on the footpaths and block pedestrian traffic, but in Hong Kong they have the wisdom to close off a few streets and have the markets there, such as the famous “Temple Street’ and Ladies markets.

You will not be alone on the Peak Tram !

You will not be alone on the Peak Tram !

On every tourists to do list is a trip on the Peak tram …be warned that there may be 200 other people trying to get up there at the same time, and hundreds more at the top already, so don’t expect a quiet time. And as one of the locals standing next to me in the queue said (derisively) “Mainlanders have no manners” as he blocked a group of mainlanders from ducking under the rope to jump the queue in front of him.

If you are lucky and get a fine clear day then the views might be worth it but when I went up it was rather dull and dreary, so I had to do quite a bit of processing on this photo:

Panorama from The Peak, Hong Kong Island

In fact the weather for the whole week was not the best for photography, overcast and hazy nearly all the time. The only decent spell of blue skies and sunshine was for a few hours on my last full day when I went out to Lantau island.

The Bird Garden

The Bird Garden

Although Hong Kong, and especially Hong Kong Island, is known for it’s urban jungle of skyscrapers there are many small parks and “sitting out” places around the town. One of these is the “Bird Garden” where people take their caged songbirds for some fresh air. Nearby is a flower market and a “fish keepers market” well worth a look.

On the island there is a small zoo, and nearby Hong Kong Park has a walk through aviary, pleasant gardens to relax in, and with free wifi !

Another spot that many tourists go to is the Man Mo Temple. Perhaps I am just blasé about temples from living in Thailand, but I found this place a bit underwhelming….

On the other hand, I thoroughly recommend a trip to the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. I did it as a round trip starting with a ferry from Central to Mui Wo, then a bus along the coast and up to the monastery with it’s huge  Buddha on top of the hill… said to be the world’s biggest bronze outdoor sitting Buddha ( a few caveats there !)

Buddha, Po Lin Monastery

Then by cable-car back down to sea level terminating near the airport, on the way you can see the mammoth bridge they are building all the way to Macau via an island off the Chinese mainland. And back to TST by train, all modes of transport paid for with that one octopus card ! Getting one of those really is the first thing you should do after arriving at HK airport.

Next ….part 2, the urban landscape. Warning, arty(?) photos ahead.

Sitting on the dock of the bay ..

While I was in Sydney recently I had a lot of spare time in between weddings and meetings, so I had a go at making a timelapse video. Shooting the thousands of photos needed was the easy part, editing them into something vaguely watchable was harder !

It is probably still a bit too long for the youtube generation’s attention span, but it is finally uploaded. So, if you have 5 minutes or so to waste I present to you “Sitting on the dock of the bay”. I thought that was as good a title as any, as most of it was shot around the harbour. The Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Luna Park and various Sydney beaches also feature.

Around 13000 still images shot on a Nikon D7000,  approx. 8000 used, edited with Adobe Lightroom and Premiere Pro.

(I suggest watching it at youtube in HD, the compression here is terrible )

Ko Lipe

As I mentioned a few days ago, I have been on holiday down at Ko Lipe, way, way down south, in fact it is the southern most island in Thailand and about 30 kms away from Langkawi in Malaysia. Getting there is quite a journey, starting with a Nok Air flight from Bangkok to Trang, a minibus to the ferry port of HatYao, and then a 3 hour ferry trip out to the island.

The flight and minibus went smoothly, but then there was a wait for the ferry to arrive. Tigerline’s schedule is only a very rough guide ! The boat runs all the way from Phuket via Ko Phi Phi and Ao Lanta down to Lipe, so it’s quite a long route. The ferry out to the island was one of their old boats, rather tatty inside. I’m sure (?) they had lifejackets somewhere but there were none visible in the cabin ! I also noticed that the handles on the emergency exit windows were broken, so you could not have opened them. Perhaps not for paranoid travellers ? Anyway, we got there safe but late, at around 4pm …a couple of days they did not arrive until 6.30, and one day the boat did not arrive at all !

Ko Lipe taxi

Ko Lipe taxi

The island is quite small, and you can walk across it in about 15 minutes or less, or take one of the local “taxis” ….a motorcycle with sidecar. There are only a few vehicles on the island belonging to resorts, and one beaten up old rubbish truck.

Pattaya Beach, Ko Lipe

Pattaya Beach, Ko Lipe

There are 3 main beaches on the island, Pattaya Beach and the not very originally named Sunrise and Sunset beaches. Most of the resorts are on, or just off, Pattaya Beach yet it was never crowded although it might be different at peak season of course. Sunrise beach has most of the more expensive resorts yet it is probably the worst beach. Much of it was covered in rubbish, sad to say a lot of it came from the locals’ village in the middle of the beach. I saw some of the boatbuilders casually throw empty spray paint cans into the ocean.

Rasta bar, Sunset Beach

Rasta bar, Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach tries hard to be the hippy backpacker sort of place, but does not really succeed. Ko Lipe does n’t seem to get the hippy beach dropout crowd, nor the Red Bull and vodka bucket toting gap year mob that tick off Ko Phi Phi as part of their asian travels, nor are there any full moon/new moon/any moon parties like on Phi Phi or Pha-ngan.

.

.

What Ko Lipe does have is some of the best diving and off-the-beach snorkelling in Thailand, which is good because there is not much else to do ! And if you take a longtail boat tour around some of the nearby islands the snorkelling gets even better. All the boats run on one of 3 set routes, and all 3 stop at Jabang where a rock rises about 15m from the seabed to a few metres deep, attracting lots of fish and with lots of soft coral.

It can get a bit crowded here, but then the boat routes spread out and it’s not too bad. Most of the other snorkelling spots are quite big and you can get away from the crowds if you want. Many of the people on the days that I went were from Malaysia, and seemingly could n’t swim so just splashed around near the boats wearing lifejackets. One of the boat’s stops is at Ko Hin Ngam, which is covered in black rocks which many of the asian tourists like to build into towers. It must be a cultural thing, our boatload of farangs just said “ok, seen it, let’s go” and got to the next snorkelling spot ahead of the crowds. Smile

I could easily have spent more time on the island just lazing around, snorkelling every day and watching the sunsets (which were often pretty spectacular) but I had prebooked my return flight so thought I had better come back and see my ladyfriend on schedule.

My ticket told me to check in for the return ferry 30 minutes before departure, but where ? Tigerline’s website said their office was on Sunrise beach but was nowhere to be found. Asking at the travel agents around town got me several different answers, but it turned out that you just got a longtail out to the ferry, and they came around checking after the boat had sailed. The return trip was on their new boat, with comfortable seats, aircon that worked, and lifejackets above your seat ! It still took nearly 3 hours to get back to the mainland though, and would have been another 3 or 4 hours for those people heading to Ko Phi Phi …. I hope they had a good book. I’m glad that I had my Kindle for the 3 hour wait at Trang airport Smile I left the beach at Ko Lipe around 9.15 am, and it was almost 9.00pm by the time I got home.

And some more photos (click to enlarge) below:

(PS more and bigger photos at my pbase gallery here, and for more info on snorkelling at Ko Lipe or elsewhere in Thailand and South East Asia have a look at this blog : WhatsTheSnorkellingLike )

A tropical sunset

Having a few days holiday on Ko Lipe, an island way down south. In fact it is the southern most island in Thailand, if it was a few kilometers further south it would be in Malaysia, so you cannot get much further from Bangkok.

This photo is part of a time lapse sequence that I shot this evening, with only basic editing on my IPad using Photoshop express.

A day at the races ….buffalo races !

Yesterday I went out to Chonburi to watch the buffalo races ( wing kwai )which are held every year as part of the town’s Buffalo Festival. Thai farmers have used buffalo on their farms for centuries, and although many have switched to the “iron buffaloes” nowadays they still hold a sentimental place in the Thai psyche so the city of Chonburi holds this festival to commemorate/cash in every year.

buffalo_racing-5 The highlight is the buffalo racing, when they race down a 130 metre course with their jok-kees riding bareback …and bare footed and bare headed. They are not as fast as racehorses, but they get up a fair bit of speed none the less. The riders don’t try to pull them up once they cross the finish line, they just jump off at full speed.

buffalo_racing-2 The buffalo usually stop once rid of the rider on their backs, but some went charging on and caused the crowd to scatter. A couple even went right out onto the road outside ! The racing buffalo are not worked on the farm, but are specially bred for racing. The farm buffaloes get to compete in the buffalo beauty competition, and for the funniest costume.

buffalo_racing-6

buffalo_racing-11 There is also a “Miss Buffalo” beauty pageant for the local girls … not the most flattering of titles I would have thought !

Also there is a competition for best decorated buffalo cart, pole climbing competitions where you have to climb up a bamboo pole to grab money from near the top, a fun fair for the kids, and of course lots of shopping and food available.

Chonburi is about 90 minutes by bus from Ekkamai bus station in Bangkok, 68 baht fare each way. Heading there the bus will go into town, then turn off the main Sukhumwit Rd and go down some side streets, stopping a couple of times. When it turns back onto Sukhumwit road it’s time to get off, near the Forum plaza mall. The races are held near City Hall, a walkable distance or just grab a motosai. Going back to Bangkok the bus starts from a side street near where you would have got off, but it would not be obvious if there is no bus parked outside, no obvious signs for the ticket office.
