Bangkok Motor Show …the “pretties”

motorshowpretties-2  As I mentioned yesterday, of the car makers’ stands the Hyundai stand featured the most prominent “aftermarket accessories” on it’s pretties.

motorshowpretties-18 The car stereo and other accessory stands had plenty of girls who were almost certainly surgically enhanced but most of the car firms’ stands went for class rather than cleavage.

After all, when you are selling Lamborghinis is n’t class what it’s all about ?
motorshowpretties-28

motorshowpretties-26 Although the girls know they are getting paid to look good and pose for the cameras, I guess they cannot smile all the time ?

But anyhow, thank you to all the pretties who smiled for the cameras each and every day of the Bangkok Motor Show.

Bangkok Motor Show 2015

Last week saw the biggest of Thailand’s two annual car shows, the other being the International Motor Expo held in December. After the media/VIP day before the public opening the event got plenty of free publicity from the Ministry of Culture, when it was predictably outraged at the photos of models in bikinis and body paint that escaped into the social media. No bikinis and body paint to be seen after the public opening, but still plenty of artificially enhanced models around although perhaps less cleavage on display than the last show.

Whether that was because of the Ministry’s outrage or not I don’t know, but perhaps they should get out of their office at Huay Kwang and go for a walk around the area. I had to go over there the other day, and within easy walking distance of their offices are several large and prominent “massage parlours”, short-time hotels and karaoke places with girls of negotiable virtue. I’m sure that the show organisers loved the free publicity though !

Lamborghini Adventador

Lamborghini Adventador

motorshow-13 Totally impractical for Bangkok, and way beyond most people’s budget, but is n’t the Lamborghini Adventador the most stunning piece of Italian design work ? Somebody had the money and did n’t care about practicality because it was sold by day 2 when I went. I hope the models were very careful with the paintwork when they leant on it !

motorshow-12 The prize for the worst colour scheme would have to go to ISUZU for this iridescent green pickup.

motorshow-2 Ford had a couple of “smart” cars there, but I wonder if this “I can park myself” car can park the Thai way ….on footpaths, in front of no parking signs, or just double park because the driver is too lazy to walk 10 extra metres ?

motorshow-10 Apart from the usual pretties, some of the stands had shows to attract the crowds. Ford had a rather strange ‘Tap Dogs in lederhosen’ show, Toyota had an even weirder circus type show while BMW had a very spectacular Bladerunner meets Cirque Du Soleil featuring trapeze artists, spacesuits, models wearing hats that turned into drones and took off, while others were zooming around the stand on electric single wheel unicycle gizmos wearing  bodysuits with neon lights. Absolutely nothing to do with cars but it attracted a huge crowd to their stand. Yamaha had a singer on their motorbike stand who was apparently a local pop idol, but sounded rather ordinary to me.

motorshow-4 We all know that sex sells, but why does it sell small boring cars like Hyundai ? Whatever the reason why, the Hyundai stand probably featured the most prominent “aftermarket accessories” of the car makers stands, although most of the cleavage was in the car stereo stand area.

motorshow-15

Alpine stereo certainly knew where people would be looking, and where to place their stickers !

I’ve never ever seen a caravan on the road here in Thailand, and only one motor home ever, but they always seem to sell at the car shows. By day 2, nearly all of these retro style caravans had “sold” signs on them.

Some more car photos for now, and some of the pretties in a separate post tomorrow.

Casablanca, Marilyn Monroe and the ‘culture gap’

When you get “involved” with somebody from another country and culture you always should expect some difficulties in the relationship, whether it be language or religion or social attitudes or whatever. There is always going to be a ‘gotcha’, a culture gap when you or your significant other either put your foot in it and make a social clanger, or you just wonder ‘WTF ?’

I’ve been visiting Thailand for many years now and I think that I have learnt most of the social intricacies such as who should wai who first, which involves knowing how the other person’s age/social status/salary compares to yours, all possibly delicate matters back in the West ! But I am sure I made a few blunders in the past.

My lady friend is used to farang tourists at work so she is pretty tolerant of our foibles although she is still bemused by the way some dress, such as guys walking down the main street shirtless, or the girls in skimpy outfits showing more flesh than a Patpong road bargirl.

The other day she was completely bemused by a purchase of mine …. one of the shops in Centralworld Mall had a sale on DVD movies, buy 9, get 2 free, and they had a lot of old classic movies, all under 100 baht so I got 11 for around 800 baht, all with English and Thai audio/subtitles. Actually 2 of them were double sets, so that was 13 movies for 800 baht or around US$2.00 each …a bargain ! The titles ranged from Casablanca, Marilyn Monroe’s Some like it hot up to Apocalypse Now and Bladerunner, the newest would have been the Harrison Ford version of The Fugitive but all were classic movies that I could watch over and over again. She just could not understand why anybody would buy “old movies”, nor why I would watch them again ! She had vaguely heard of Marilyn Monroe but thought she was still alive….no dear, she die long time ago.

While it’s no Hollywood or Bollywood,  Thailand does have it’s own movie industry but most Thai movies are instantly forgettable trash, consisting of pseudo-historical dramas, slapstick humour, car crashes and chases and social rich boy-poor girl dilemmas …or sometimes all of the above. From the ones I have seen, not many of them would bear more than one re-watching.

Anyhow, when my dearest was around over the weekend we had our usual movie session starting with Casablanca. I told her it was a very famous old movie, naturally she had never heard of it ….

Tirac, TV not work.

What do you mean, it’s working

Look, no colour.

It’s an old movie, it is only black and white.

Huh ?

where Casablanca ?

In Africa.

Why no black man ? Africa man black.

In north Africa, North Africans only brown, like Arab,  like you dear. (political correctness wasted on her !)

Ingrid Bergmann comes on screen ….she very beautiful, how old she now

She is dead now, die about 30 years ago.

Why she die young ?

She did n’t, this very old movie.

Eventually she ran out of questions and I think she actually enjoyed the movie, but I figured Some like it hot would be a better choice for the next movie …more humour that she could easily understand, especially with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis dressing in drag to hide from the mobsters. This being Thailand, I think she could relate to guys acting as women !

Songkran is coming …

You know when Songkran is coming around when the shops start selling lurid shirts like these …

20150329_160348

It looks as if I will be spending Songkran at the GF’s village up in Khon Kaen …that should be “interesting”. We will be driving up with her sister, so I insisted we leave before the holiday rush out of the city. Bangkok becomes relatively deserted as everybody from the provinces heads home for the 5 day holiday, but the roads become absolute nightmares. The main highways become clogged with traffic, which leads to people taking dangerous risks to make up time. Every year hundreds of people die on the roads of Thailand during the Songkran holiday, and under the way they count the road tally here you are only a casualty if you die at the scene or soon after. If you die of your injuries a couple of weeks later you are not part of the official Songkran road toll, or otherwise it would be even higher.

Bangkok at Songkran turns into the world’s biggest water fight, but the GF tells me that things will be more traditional in the village ….making merit at the temple, paying respects to the elders of the village etc but I’m sure that as almost certainly the only farang in the village I will be a target for any of the kids with water !

Cosplay time again ….

Snakes alive !

Snakes alive !

Last weekend there was a “Thai-Japan anime and music festival “ held at the Centralworld mall so I wandered along to get a few photos. As I’ve said before, I have absolutely no idea what it is all about, or who/what the cosplayers are supposed to be, but there are always plenty of people in weird costumes wanting to get their photo taken !

Bonnie and Clyde ?

Bonnie and Clyde ?

This couple looked like Bonnie and Clyde, the American gangster couple, so I have no idea what they were doing at a Japanese anime festival but they probably had the classiest costume.

cosplay@centralworldmarch2015-15 There were the usual extrovert girls (aged 20+) dressed as anime cartoons idea of sexy schoolgirls in short skirts and stockings, which I have absolutely no problem with Smile, but I did see quite a few young girls of no more than 15 dressed the same way which I found a bit disconcerting even when they were accompanied by a parent.

Barely into their teens and flaunting their sexuality already ….. I’m surprised the Thai Ministry of Culture has n’t made a pronouncement on this, LOL. For those outside of Thailand, the watchdogs of thai morality Ministry of Culture recently warned girls that the new trend of posting “under boob selfies” on social media was posting pornography and against the Computer Crimes Act, which could get them 5 years in jail. Nobody I knew, male or female, had even heard of this apparent trend before so I am sure Google was busy.

Mind you, this is the same Ministry that loudly criticised a couple of girls a few years ago for dancing topless at Songkran, until people pointed out that the Ministry’s own website banner portrayed topless Siamese ladies from not that long ago …OOPS ! Better call in the webmaster over a long weekend to fix that ! Anyway, I am sure there are lots of people here in Thailand who have now seen what an under-boob selfie is, so thank you to Google and the Minister of Culture. Smile

But I digress ….I have posted a few photos already, of “goth girl” and “grim reaper”, but here are some more for anybody interested :

The Grim Reaper ?

cosplayportrait-2

One of the cosplayers at the Thai-Japan Anime Festival held at Centralworld, Bangkok, on the weekend. I’ve absolutely no idea who/what he is supposed to be cosplaying, but he looks like the “Grim Reaper” so that will do for a title ……
