Loy Krathong

Young girl in traditional dress at Loy Krathong

Last night was Loy Krathong, a festival to mark the full moon of the 11th lunar month, celebrated by floating “krathongs’ which are traditionally made out of banana tree trunk and leaves, decorated with flowers, incense and candles. Because of the mourning period following the recent death of the highest Buddhist monk in Thailand some of the other celebrations, such as fireworks and beauty contests, were cancelled or at least more subdued than usual.

They are also made with less traditional methods such as these bread krathongs … make extra merit by feeding the fish and turtles !
They are certainly a better choice than the non biodegradable ones made with a Styrofoam base, that’s for sure.
It is amazing that these handmade items sell for a couple of dollars or less, even the large ones covered in orchids only cost 100baht or so.

The river current would help them on their journey, but at the lake in a local park that I went to there was only a fickle breeze which often died or returned them to shore !
Some people also place a few coins on their krathongs, so there were young kids searching through the marooned ones looking for a few baht pocket money, sometimes a bit too soon, before the krathongs had really set sail !

The Golden Mount

golden mount-1

Yesterday I had to go over the other side of town, and thought I might try and get some photos of the Loy Kratong temple fair at Wat Saket while over that way. The fair was a waste of time photographically, but I got a few photos of the Golden Mount anyway. I thought I would get soaking wet at one stage but the rain held off.

More colours of protest

While on my way to the Golden Mount I had to pass through Ratchadamnoen Avenue which has been taken over by the anti government protesters. With shelter from sun and rain, free food, and entertainment between speeches they are well set up … I don’t think they are going anywhere in the near future.

The anti-government protest movement is a coalition of several groups, each with their own colours and “uniform”. There is the “V for Thailand” group with their white Guy Fawkes masks, the anti government corruption crusaders in black, the royalists in yellow, all united under the red, white and blue of the Thai flag.

In Thai culture, the feet are the lowest and dirtiest part of the body and it is impolite to point the soles of your feet at somebody, so it would be quite an insult to current prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra (l) and her brother/former PM/convicted criminal on the run Thaksin (r) if you were to wipe your dirty feet on their faces on this mat !

Whatever their group, a common theme is blowing whistles in protest at government officials and in support of the protest speeches, so it was rather noisy !

One enterprising vendor had the answer for that though, selling earplugs that seemed to fallen off the back of a truck ….or rather a plane, as they were labelled as “Aeroflot” !

Both the English language newspapers here seem to be leaning more and more against the government, labelling it as corrupt and inept in editorials today. What will happen next ? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Then and now, and a colour divide

A few days ago I came across a Facebook page, 77PPP, which has lots of old photos and postcards of Thailand from the 1920s onwards. (there are 77 provinces in Thailand, so I guess it is 77 Provinces Photos and Postcards?). If you are interested in old photos or Thai life of bygone times it is worth a look but be warned there are lots of photos to download !

77ppp-lumpini75

Yesterday I thought it might be interesting to go to some of the locations that I know and take some comparison shots.

I knew this was the south-east entrance to Lumpini Park from the clock tower in the centre of the photo, a short walk from Sala Daeng Skytrain station. You can just see the clock tower in the centre still, but now there is an expressway built overhead for through traffic.

This is the Erawan Shrine, at the Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok.

77ppp-erawan

In 1965 when the picture above was taken, the Erawan Hotel in the background would have been rather fancy for Bangkok. The shrine itself seems empty, but nowadays it is full of worshippers from dawn to dusk, and the surrounding area is full of 5 star hotels and glitzy shopping malls with the skytrain running overhead.

Ratchaprasong was also the site of a prolonged protest against the  government of that time by the “red shirts” (supporters of former PM Thaksin who is on the run after being convicted of corruption) which was only ended when the military was sent in, with many people being killed, shops looted and buildings burnt down.

protest-1Nowadays political tensions are running high again, with many protests by yellow shirts, black shirts, student groups etc  against the current government (led by Thaksin’s sister and/or proxy) which is allegedly trying to pardon him and give him back all his seized assets under the pretext of “national reconciliation’”. And now the red shirts, allegedly financed by Thaksin, are protesting against the protesters so yesterday while I was photographing the Erawan shrine this was going on behind me :

The irony of it all is that a pardon for Thaksin would also absolve military and government leaders of (possibly politically concocted) murder charges resulting from the military crackdown on redshirts yet they do not want this amnesty bill passed, while the redshirts want it passed even though those they hold responsible for the deaths of their comrades walk away scot free !

With the International Court of Justice due to rule soon on a territorial dispute with Cambodia over the Preah Vihar temple nationalistic feelings are also being stirred up, I could have arrived in Thailand at an “interesting” time !

Around the ‘hood

Since I moved into the neighbourhood I’ve been out and about with my camera a few times, so here are a few pics :

neighbourhood-2

The Pad Thai queen of On Nut

Every night this lady is working her wok at the front of the On Nut night market, with a steady flow of customers getting off the Skytrain and grabbing some takeaway Pad Thai before heading home.

It is almost a case of Pad Thai meets performance art, as she always has an audience watching her turn out 15 serves at a time.

While the boss keeps stirring her noodles, one assistant takes in the cash, another prepares the banana leaf “plates’” with exactly 2 prawns per customer, ready to be folded up when the boss dishes out the finished noodles.

Yesterday I mentioned Halloween and how Thais love a good ghost story …. this is the shrine to Mae Nak, which is one of Thailand’s most famous ghost stories and has been made into several films. Nak was a beautiful woman who supposedly lived in this district about 200 years ago, and whose husband Mak was conscripted into the army during a war. While he was away Nak and their baby died during childbirth, but stay in their home as ghosts until Mak returns from the war. When his friends try to tell him she is just a ghost he does not believe them, and she kills the friends for trying to separate them. One day though she drops some fruit onto the ground, and he sees her stretch out her arm to pick it up and realises the truth. That night he sneaks out of the house and runs off to the local temple, Wat Mahabut, which she cannot enter as it is holy ground. In her anger she terrorizes the locals before an exorcist captures her spirit. Nowadays women come here to pray for an easy childbirth or for their husbands and boyfriends to avoid conscription … there is quite a collection of beautiful dresses inside that have been given to her !

neighbourhood-4

In Nak’s time, Wat Mahabut was a couple of days travel from the capital, nowadays it is just another suburb with condo blocks looking down on it, but if you walk through the grounds of the wat, down to the river you can almost imagine you are in a semi-rural village.

Toothless old women dressed in sarongs sell lottery tickets next to fortune tellers … a happy coincidence ?

neighbourhood-9

Old men paddle their boats across the river, or go fishing.

neighbourhood-7

No, this is not a pet shop …. you buy a bucketful of fish, frogs, eels or whatever then release them into the river to make merit. But if you earn good karma by releasing them, should n’t that mean that the stallholder or his supplier has earned some bad karma by catching them ?

neighbourhood-6

Inside the Wat there are the usual Buddha images, with a different image for each day of the week so you can make special offerings to the Buddha for your day of birth.

neighbourhood-5

But opposite them is this fellow, I have absolutely no idea who or what he is supposed to be ? I’ve been to this wat before and do not remember seeing him there …. perhaps he is just a Halloween extra ?

There is a western style supermarket about 300 metres from my condo, which makes shopping relatively easy as the price tag on the shelf will (usually)tell you what you are buying even if the packaging is only in Thai.  Otherwise even the most mundane of tasks like grocery shopping would be more difficult ..are you looking at shampoo or laundry detergent ? But does your local supermarket have an entire aisle dedicated to rice ? And I bet it does not have an aisle for “Religious Accessory” ! Yes, buy your offering to the monks at your local supermarket.

And continuing from my last post about Christmas coming early, why not buy your New Year presents now. Your New Year gifts are prepackaged and on sale now, a whole basketful of goodies for about $55 !

Is it almost Christmas already ?

xmas-1

Are the Christmas decorations going up your local shopping malls yet ?

Christmas seems to come  earlier every year, and Bangkok is no exception. The beer gardens at Central World mall are under construction, which signifies the cool season is almost here.

Despite being a Buddhist country Thais love their Christmas lights and trees….any excuse for a party !

The tree seems to be missing a few branches though ?

Of course, Halloween comes around tomorrow, and that is another western festivity that Thais have borrowed. Bars are having Halloween parties, vendors are selling tatty Halloween odds and ends in the streets and at least some of the malls are decorated in a ghoulish theme …Thais also love a good ghost story.
