The road to Birdsville

cattle country

cattle country

After Longreach I headed for Winton, and then westward to Boulia across the “Channel Country” and then south to Birdsville. Once you start heading west you know you are really “outback”, the country soon changes to endless flat plains broken only by the dry creek beds meandering across the countryside. It is so flat that when it does rain the creeks make numerous channels flowing every which way, there is no distinct downhill, so there are channels everywhere for a few kilometres, and then open plains again. The road is mostly single lane, but you can see the road trains coming with plenty of time to pull over !
About halfway to Boulia is the Cawnpore lookout at the only real hills :

The Earth IS flat !

The Earth IS flat !

After an overnight stop at the Boulia caravan park it was southward to Bedourie and Birdsville, and if I thought the road could n’t get any flatter I was wrong. The creeks and trees soon disappeared in my rear view mirror, while the road stretched out in front of me ….at least it was still bitumen for most of the way, and in good condition.

And 50kms later, it's still flat

And 50kms later, it’s still flat

Eventually I could see some hills on the horizon, but the horizon is a very long way away in flat country like this so it took a while to get to a rest area and lookout at this hill.
According to a map in the Bedourie Visitor Information Centre , there are only 14 stations (cattle ranches/farms) in the entire Diamantina Shire, but they are big ones !

just somebody's 1million hectare backyard

just somebody’s 1million hectare backyard

The look out is on a cattle property of just over one million hectares, so this is just one part of somebody’s backyard.
A quick stop in Bedourie to stretch my legs and then back on the road. Just south of Bedourie the road skirts the edge of the Simpson Desert, and you cross a few sandhills to break the monotony, then the road flattens out again.
The road was bitumen for a few kms, then gravel, then back to bitumen, but the gravel sections were in good condition …they must have graded it ready for all the race week traffic perhaps ?
Camp that night was at the ruins of Carpoory Station, which used to be part of the Kidman cattle empire before it was abandoned after many years of drought ….even the biggest and best of the cattle kings could be wrong.

An outback WTF moment.

An outback WTF moment.

Sometimes when you are driving outback you come across something that just makes you say to yourself ..”WTF ?”
Why would anybody do this ? Driving towards Birdsville are 3 examples, at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere you see something in the distance, then when you get close you realise it’s a collection of household items …a washing machine, an air conditioner, an old wood fired stove that must have weighed a ton, a fax machine and lots of other stuff, including a lawn mower that would not have got much use out there!
Then a few kilometres down the road, on a flat gibber plain, was a garden setting …a table and 2 seats.
Then a few kms farther was a sign festooned with shoes, from tatty old sandals to a set of heels.
Another 20 minutes or so and I was driving in to Birdsville at last, and the legendary Birdsville hotel was doing a brisk trade 2 days before the races started, thousands of people were in town already. The normal population of around 100 had increased considerably, there thousands of people already camped in the bush outside of town, the caravan park was almost full and the tent city had tents so close you would hear anybody snoring 5 tents away. I’d rather put up my tent in the bush …water was on tap, Portaloos across the road and rubbish bins nearby. So, tent up and walk back to the pub it was !
More pics for now, more to come later:

Star trails

Boulia shire, way, way out in western Queensland has a tourist motto :
wide open horizons, magical night skies

night skies, outback Queensland

night skies, outback Queensland

For once, it’s not an exaggeration.
As Banjo Paterson wrote in “Clancy of The Overflow”:
And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended,
And at night the wond’rous glory of the everlasting stars.

Banjo Paterson spent a lot of time in this area, Waltzing Matilda was of course written by him after a visit to nearby Dagworth Station, so he knew what he was talking about when he wrote “Clancy”.

Richard and Soph from morgansafari asked me about the settings for night exposures, so the technical stuff :
photo 1 35 minutes at f/4.5, ISO 320
photo 2 27 minutes at f/6.3, ISO 640
Both taken at 18mm, second photo cleaned up with Topez denoise because of the higher ISO.

Longreach

This gallery contains 8 photos.

Longreach is the self proclaimed “capital of the outback” so I suppose it is a fitting place for the Australian Stockmans’ Hall of Fame and Outback Museum ? I think it started off as just the Hall of Fame, but … Continue reading

Back to the Outback

Well, beach time is over, and I’m back on the road on my way to Birdsville.

Weird and wacky sports !

Weird and wacky sports !

After Cape tribulation and Mission beach I finished my beach bum days at Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays with a 3 day yacht trip and more lazing around. Not surprisingly Airlie has changed a lot since I was there last, it’s much more upmarket nowadays compared to the 90’s when it was “backpacker central”. There are still plenty of backpackers around, but more yuppies too. The old cheap cafes have turned into boutique restaurants, even the Airlie Beach hotel has gone upmarket !
Nowadays the weird and wacky entertainment is at Magnums …think goldfish or seahorse racing ! and of course the usual wet t-shirt competitions. The yacht trip was a bit of a let down, we spent more time motoring than sailing because of lack of wind, and did n’t make it out to Whitehaven beach.

The Black Stump

The Black Stump

From Airlie I headed south to Rockhampton, inland and west towards Charleville before veering north again to Blackall, home of the legendary “Black Stump”. Long, long ago when surveyors were mapping Queensland they used a tree stump at Blackall to mount their instruments on, and as Blackall was the furthest west accurately surveyed anything past there was “beyond the black stump” …well, that’s how the story goes !

3 star motel .. $110, thousand star view …priceless

I had planned on stopping in Blackall, I rather fancied a counter meal and a couple of beers at one of the old pubs, but one caravan park was full and the other only had powered sites for caravans. I noticed a motel advertising 3-star budget rooms so I went in and asked the price …$110 ! A hundred and ten dollars for a no frills budget room right on the highway…. no thanks, mate ! So I kept driving and had to make do with a thousand star view from my swag again. Luckily I found a campsite before dusk, because there was an awful lot of roadkill along the road around Blackall. There was one stretch just out of town with dead animals scattered over the road every 15 metres or so ! Even dead, a roo corpse could make a mess of your car so it was a matter of swerving around the bigger piles of roadkill. There was also a lot of emus around the area, I probably saw more that day than I’ve ever seen before. Some flocks were of 50 or 60 birds, its unusual to see that many in one flock.

The tree of knowledge

The tree of knowledge

Next day it was on to Barcaldine, home of the “Tree of Knowledge”. During one of the big shearers’ strikes the strikers would sit around this tree and talk, these meetings eventually led to the formation of the Australian Labor Party so the tree has always been a big part of union folk-lore. That did not stop somebody from poisoning it a few years ago though ! Nowadays the preserved tree is sheltered under a giant wind chime (well that’s what it looks like to me).
According to the signs on the heritage walking trail there were 13 pubs along the main street, there are still 5 within a 100 metres of the tree, so I could n’t help wondering if the pubs were part of the reason for holding their meetings under the tree ?
Next stop Longreach …….

Hostel review – Mission Beach Retreat

Mission Beach YHA

Mission Beach YHA

MISSION BEACH YHA-2

Just a quick review of the “Mission Beach Retreat” YHA where I stayed recently.

It is only a small place, around 30 beds, so it is a lot friendlier than most hostels, so the managers seemed to know every guests name. It’s got a mix of rooms, from doubles to multibed dorms.

MISSION BEACH YHA-3
The room I was in had 1 double and 3 single beds, so it could have been a family room too. One thing to note if you are a bit shy about sharing a room with a stranger of opposite sex is that they only have mixed dorms.
The bathrooms are shared between rooms, so there was a bit of a wait sometimes ! On that subject, the cleaning is done by a couple of the resident backpackers on the usual ‘work for your bed’ arrangement, and they did forget to top up the toilet paper ….a potentially awkward situation that should n’t arise !!
There are 2 lounge areas with big screen TVs, one has satellite TV and the other just DVDs and free to air TV.

The kitchen is quite good, big enough for the number of guests and fully equipped. There is a small supermarket nearby, or a full sized Woolies at South Mission Beach if you have transport.
The hostel is 1 street back from the beach, so it is just a short walk to the beach.
All things considered, it’s a very nice place to stay, good value at $25/night. 8/10
