Cars and cleavage ….Bangkok Motor Show 2016

2016_motor_ show-13Another catch-up post ! As I mentioned last time I have not had time to download a lot of photos from my camera because of personal stuff requiring a trip out of town recently, so I had many photos to sort through.

These are from the Bangkok Motor Show held out at Muang Thon Thani early this month, supposedly the biggest and best auto show in SEA, but I’ll take that with a grain of salt.

Traditional Siamese dress !

Traditional Siamese dress !

Before the show started Big Brother at the Ministry of Culture had urged the car companies and the “pretties” to dress in a more traditional Siamese way, and not to wear anything too revealing.

As most Siamese women customarily went topless or just with a loose scarf slung over the shoulder until the 1930s, when the Prime Minister of the time mandated that everybody should be “civilised” and wear western dress that could have been interesting !

traddress_headerAs it turned out nothing much changed, there was still the usual number of girls draped over the cars and motorcycles with what was probably silicone enhanced cleavage on display, especially with the motorcycles and audio equipment stands.

Who needs sexy girls when you look like this ?

Who needs sexy girls when you look like this ?

The upmarket manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini did not need to use such tactics, their vehicles attracted enough attention on their own.

Their models were classy, not trashy …

Who buys these ?

Who buys these ?

Once again there were several motorhomes and caravans on display, and being sold, yet you never see them on the road here in Thailand. No, actually I have seen one motorhome on the road, but never a caravan.

sold

Somebody bought this F type for a mere  10,999,999 baht !

But there plenty of more reasonable deals on offer too, not that I plan on buying a car here anytime soon.

Also lots of motorcycles on show, big and small :

I don’t know if the Minister of Culture would be happy with these :

But I bet he would not have approved of the Audio Show outside the main hall :

He would not have liked the way the coyotes dressed or danced, nor would he have liked the “music” played by about 20 modified sound trucks, each with at least one girl dancing on top. It was deafening !!

The “Asia Pacific Orchid Conference”

orchid show-15 I know that I am a bit late with this as it was on a couple of weeks ago but I have been busy with personal stuff lately and have not had time to download these and many more pics from my camera. But two weeks ago there was a big orchid show on out at Impact Exhibition Centre so I wandered way over the other side of town to have a look. One of the few things that I miss from Australia is my garden, where I used to dabble in growing orchids.

orchid show-13 Nothing too exotic or difficult to grow, but I did end up with nearly 100 plants either in the shadehouse or growing “wild” on trees in the garden.

The “Asia Pacific Orchid Conference” featured growers from Japan to Myanmar to Singapore, with displays of single plants, single blooms and large landscape displays.

There were hundreds of entries in the single plant competition alone, and there must have been many thousands of orchids used in the landscape display section.

All the close-ups were shot handheld, not an easy task with a macro lens ! I did have a tripod but was asked to put it away 😦 So there were a lot of out of focus rejects….

I was back out at Impact a few days later for the 2016 Motor Show, now to sort out the photos from that …..

To Khao Lak, and snorkelling the Similan Islands

After my last stop at Ko Phi Phi it was on to Khao Lak via a ferry to Krabi, and then minibus. It should have been a smooth connection but the ferry was late arriving and the minibus left early, so I missed it by a few minutes and had to wait 2 hours for the next one.

sunset-1 Never mind, I got to my accommodation at Poseidon Bungalows just in time to see the fishing boats head out into yet another Andaman Sea sunset.

I got lucky and was given the end bungalow which has probably the best seaviews from it’s balcony even though it is one of the older and cheaper wood and bamboo style huts. The newer, bigger, more expensive concrete bungalows do not have such good views. The same owners also run the live-aboard snorkelling tour, so it is a convenient place to stay before and after the boat trip.

Khao Lak beach

Khao Lak beach

Poseidon bungalows are on their own quiet bit of beach about 1.5km walk along the beach from Khao Lak, which is n’t much more than a small cluster of resorts and a small street of tourist shops. The whole area seems to cater mainly for German and Scandinavian tourists, nothing much to do except relax without a jet-ski or banana boat in sight.

galley-1 The boat trip started early a couple of days later, we were heading out of harbour by 8am with breakfast on board. We certainly did not go hungry on board, the cooks did miracles from the small galley.

Manta Ray, Ko Bon

Manta Ray, Ko Bon

On the way out to the islands we had a (very brief) sighting of a whale shark and then some dolphins, and at our first stop we hit the jackpot …. manta rays ! The first one came along just a few seconds after I had jumped in, and shortly after that another came swimming straight towards me. That set the tone for the next 3 days, we saw just about everything …turtles, sharks, barracuda, octopus and the usual multitude of multi-coloured tropical fish.

Crystal clear water with visibility up to 40m, with water temperature in the mid to high twenties, beautiful sunny days …what more could you ask for ?

Yet another tropical sunset perhaps ? Done !

One of the islands has a viewpoint looking out over the anchorage, a perfect spot to watch the sunset.

But all good things must come to an end, and eventually it was time to return to the mainland and another couple of days at Poseidon for me, before a few days in Phuket and then back to Bangkok later this week Sad smile

Sun, sand, snorkelling, and Singhas at sunset …week 2

After Ko Lipe week 2 of S,S,S,S@S2016 was at Ko Phi Phi, otherwise known as “Gap year central” and a vastly different atmosphere to the laid back Ko Lipe.

bucketsofbooze-2 If Lipe had a soundtrack it would be reggae mixed with Jimmy Buffet and some cool jazz at a beachside bar, Phi Phi’s would a cacophony of techno “music” mixed with the sound of spruikers from the muay thai show, the EPL “football” commentary, and the shrill voices of drunken ladettes carrying buckets of cheap cocktails.

So why did I go there ?  It does have some decent snorkelling, and it is halfway to my next destination of Khao Lak and the Similan Islands. It was several hours by boat though, either 7 hours on the Tigerline fast ferry or 5 hours on a speedboat. Neither is especially appealing as the speedboat is quicker but noisy, expensive, crowded and bumpy, the so called fast ferry is slower and usually late but at least it is several hundred baht cheaper and has room to get up and move around so that’s the way I went.

ferry-1  As far as safety goes I do not think either would pass inspection in the real world ( nothing unusual there!) but I’ve never heard of a Thai ferry sinking or capsizing, unlike the speedboats….many incidents involving them ! Obviously I got there safe and sound to write this anyway….

phiphi-5 When you get away from the rabbit warren of bars, shops and guesthouses of Tonsai the island is still quite beautiful, just ignore the recent story about 80% of the island’s wastewater flowing untreated into the sea and do not swim in the bay near town !

phiphi-18

Lo Moo Dii beach.

The best snorkelling I have had at Phi Phi before was at Long Beach/Hat Yao but this time I hiked over to the far side of the island to Lo Moo Dii, quite a hike but well worth it. More variety of coral, plenty of fish and not have to worry about boats passing too close, something that is always a bit of a worry at Long Beach, more of a worry than the harmless sharks at Shark Point.

I was going to go on a longtail boat trip to some of the outer snorkelling spots but I came down with a dose of tummy troubles, and had to stay close to a bathroom that day. I’ve eaten plenty of street food since I’ve been living in Thailand and never had a problem, the only 2 times I’ve been sick have both been here on Phi Phi where I’ve only eaten at restaurants. So that was one day wasted but never mind, there are worse places to be sick than on a tropical island Smile

Next stop is Khao Lak over on the west coast, north of Phuket which means another ferry to Krabi and then a 2 hour minibus ride for an overnight stop before heading out to the Similan Islands for 3 days.

Island days

It was time for some R&R down on the islands again, so first it was off to Ko Lipe again but not without some hassles with Nok Air who cancelled many flights but only announced that it was for Feb 23. When I checked their schedule I noticed my flight was missing on the 25th, their call centre reluctantly confirmed the cancellations were for more than one day !

Anyway I changed my flight to the earliest one which meant getting up and out to Don Mueang airport at an unearthly hour and then a long wait at Trang for my connection to the island ferry, but after a couple of days in paradise that all seemed insignificant.

It has been windy for a while with a big sea swell, which made the ferry trip a rough one, and the underwater visibility was not great for the first few days snorkelling. That did not stop me from spending many hours in the water though !

While I was down in Singapore recently I bought myself a new toy, a Canon G7X and a dedicated underwater housing.

While I am still getting used to it, I have to say that it seems a very good buy. The menus and submenus and subsubmenus  were a bit confusing at first but I think I have figured out the various underwater options.

Apart from the photo of the Moray Eel which was taken with a GoPro, all these underwater photos were taken with the Canon.

The island is a bit more crowded than when I was here in November, but many people left Sunday afternoon and it is a lot quieter now.

It's a hard life

It’s a hard life

One more day here and then I am off to Koh Phi Phi, and later to Khao Lak for a live-aboard trip out to the Similan Islands. Yes, it’s a hard life ….
