An extract from a Vancouver publication, whose editor needs to learn some geography. (page 14, so it’s obviously not important news LOL)
Canada ? Where is that ?

We interrupt our normal programming …..

Rivetting TV ....not !

Rivetting TV ….not !

coup-1 So this is what a military coup d’état looks like !
Well, it finally happened …after bringing in martial law a couple of days ago the military have gone all the way and launched a coup. Apparently the generals “invited” all the leaders from pro and anti government protesters, the government and opposition, to more talks today and when once again they got nowhere they just detained them all and took over. Hopefully they put all the leaders in the same room so that they will have to talk !
(edit : just read in online news this quote : A military source said the leaders were told “we will keep you together until you understand and love each other” …LOL)
In the meantime all the Tv stations have been showing the same message, except for a few minutes of the usual royal news which is on every night. The free to air stations were first, then the cable TV channels later.

Pre-coup martial law media op yesterday

Pre-coup martial law media op yesterday

Bangkok is under curfew tonight, I just stuck my head out of the window and it is eerily quiet. Normally Bangkok never sleeps, but tonight the Skytrain (light rail system) shut down at 9pm as did the bar down at the market although the food stalls stayed open a bit later.
But nobody was fazed about it … mai pen rai as the locals say. I guess when you have had 18 coups in the last 80 years you get used to this sort of thing ! No doubt though that the US State Dept and other foreign governments will have their say about it tomorrow !
This cartoon was posted on writer Michael Yon’s Facebook page earlier today, before the coup, I don’t know where he got it from but it was rather apt at the time :

Wat Pho in HDR

watphoHDR-1
watphoHDR4-1
I’m not a fan of surreal HDR photos so I tried to keep these as realistic as possible while capturing the dynamic range from whitewashed walls in bright sun to fairly deep shadow under the eaves. In reality you could barely see the Buddhas in the shadow of the bottom photo.
Images processed from 5 RAW exposures, at +2EV,+1EV,0,-1EV,-2EV, using Photoshop HDR Pro and then verticals in the second photo straightened with DxO Viewpoint (it would have chopped too much out of the first one).

Monochrome Buddhas

Buddhas, Wat Pho, Bangkok

Buddhas, Wat Pho, Bangkok

watphobuddhas-2 I went to Wat Pho yesterday to do some photography. It’s one of Bangkok’s major tourist attractions because of it’s famous reclining Buddha image, around 50 metres long ! I’ve been there several times before, but this time I wanted to try and get some different photos so I took my fisheye lens and a tripod for some HDR images. As it is the low season now I managed to get some photos without tourists walking through the shot, but I’m still working on the HDR effects.
I have done a few monochrome images though, using Topaz B&W Effects for the one above and a couple using Photoshop and Lightroom. This one probably needs a bit of fine tuning, but I think it is better than the original on the left ?

And below is a photo of the Reclining Buddha using my fisheye lens …even with nearly 180˚ field of view you cannot get it all in !

More cosplay …..

Rock'n roll schoolgirl

Rock’n roll schoolgirl

Just a few more photos from the cosplay on the weekend ! I’ve been playing around in Photoshop with some of them, including the one on the left. As the event was held at a busy shopping mall sometimes people walked through the scene just at the wrong moment so I’ve been doing a bit of blurring backgrounds etc.
I’m certainly no expert at Photoshop, as you can probably tell, but it’s fun to play around with it sometimes.
cosplayCWmay2014-23 Some of the cosplayers, especially the girls, must put an awful lot of time, effort, and probably money into their costumes. Somebody asked me if I only took photos of the girls ….no, I did take some photos of the guys but most of their costumes were rather boring. And I think at least one of the female characters is not female, which is not unusual here ! I saw one of them putting the final touches of makeup on, they looked rather masculine.
If anybody is interested, there is a local guy here, Nathalang, who makes some pretty good videos of the cosplay events which you can check out on youtube here

I think there is another event on this weekend, but the website is in Thai (naturally) and Google translate is not very clear on details so I might go along just on spec …hey, I’m retired with nothing else to do ! LOL

Cosplay at Anime Festival

cosplayCWmay2014-18As I mentioned yesterday there was a anime festival at one of the shopping malls here in Bangkok, which attracted lots of cosplayers, and almost as many photographers !
Here are just a few of the photos I took at the cosplay over the weekend :
