Expat life week 1 … apartment hunting

After a couple of days resting to get rid of the jet lag (yes, even in business class !) and catching up with friends here in Bangkok it was time to start looking for somewhere to live. I had already narrowed the area down where I wanted to live. It had to be close to either the “Skytrain” (elevated light rail) or the MRT underground routes for ease of getting around without any of the hassles of Bangkok traffic. It had to be reasonably close to the farang (westerner) district of lower Sukhumvit road, but not too close. On Nut fitted the requirements, so that’s where I settled on …. easy part done !
There are 2 ways of apartment hunting here in BKK …use an online agent, or pound the pavement. I took the “easy” way and looked online, found some potential places and rang up the agents. A couple never answered the phone, another promised to get back to me but never did, one listing was completely out of date, and another just wanted to sell me a place ! The remaining 3 agents had nothing suitable listed, so it had to be the old fashioned way of knocking on doors. Most apartments in BKK have an office in the complex, so you just find a likely looking building and ask if there are any vacancies.
It’s the tail end of the hot and wet season here at the moment, so a couple of times I had to head for shelter before a tropical storm drenched me, which made the search a bit longer. But after a few days I found somewhere suitable …200m from a Skytrain station, with a supermarket and shops just a bit further away, well within my budget at 13000 baht/month.

So what do you get for 13000 baht/month, or just under $AU440 ?
You get a smallish place of 35 sq metres, which is about average for a modern 1 bedroom apartment in Bangkok, but with more storage space than many older and bigger places here. I don’t think there is any wasted space here.
The bedroom has a small desk built in, with a (slightly worn) office chair included. The bathroom is small, that is one room lacking in storage ….a small cabinet would be nice. The kitchen area is small too, but many older apartments don’t even have a kitchen space.

It comes with fridge and microwave in the kitchen, air-con, pillows and mattress in the bedroom, large screen TV and another air-con in the living area. Cable TV is included in the rent, about 70 channels including 7 English language ones. There is a small fitness room downstairs, with exercise bikes, treadmills and free weights, and a coin operated laundry room at 20 baht ( $AU0.65) a load. And free wifi in the lobby area too.

Every decent apartment complex comes with security guards, this one is no exception. Every time I walk over the road to the 7/11 they jump up and give me a big salute, and same again when I come back a couple of minutes later ! If I’m going down the road to the supermarket they want to hail me a motorcycle taxi, even though it’s only a couple of hundred metres away. They take the ID of everybody coming in, so I think I’ll be safe and sound here!
I’ve seen about 6 or 7 other farang in this complex, and several more in the area, but it is still mainly a Thai area so everything is cheaper here than it would be around lower Sukhumvit. At the end of the soi (sidestreet) is a night market, with many food stalls with food from less than 2 dollars, cheaper beer and nightly entertainment in the beer garden, and a guy who makes the most yummy smoothies I’ve had in a long time for just over a dollar. And if I get desperate, there is a Macca’s over the road which is also cheaper than in the tourist ghettos ( a Big Mac meal is 148 baht, approx. $5, compared to 158 on lower Sukhumvit), and KFC, and other fast food chains.
There is no danger of going hungry here in Bangkok !
Some more pics of the apartment for now, and more to come soon on the neighbourhood.

It’s different up the front end !

It’s going to be hard to travel cattle class again after yesterdays flight !

Just the entree

Just the entree

Travelling business class was so different that I almost felt I was on another aeroplane. Starting with the priority boarding, then once I had turned left and gone upstairs I was greeted with a wai, and a hot towel as soon as I was seated, then offered a choice of champagne or orange juice ….10.15am was a bit too early for bubbly so I went for the juice. After takeoff we were given the menu and wine list ….it was a good thing I had not eaten the free breakfast at the lounge. The feast started with cocktail Beef Kebabs, then the entrée of Smoked Salmon and Seared Scallops with salad in the photo above ( a rather poor one taken with my crappy phone camera).
meal2
Then we had a choice of four main courses …Pan-fried Lamb, Barbequed Pork, Chicken Pa-naeng or Roast Perch. The chicken is my favourite Thai dish, but I went for the lamb as I thought it was probably my last chance to eat lamb for a while. Then it was cheese and fruits, before having to find room for the dessert, a rather yummy cheesecake.
yummy !

yummy !

And of course all this was served on proper crockery, with proper cutlery, and a starched tablecloth ! And washed down with your choice of wine ….not just red or white, but from about 8 different wines. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much for lunch, all I could manage from the second meal 4 hours later was the fruit and chocolate (there is always room for chocolate!).
I don’t know about the rest of the plane, but the upper business class section was only half full, so not only did I have all the extra legroom but also an empty seat next to me. So, so different to all those trips in cramped economy class ! Sydney check-in had given me an express pass through outbound passport control which was not needed because there was no queue, unlike immigration at Bangkok …lines of people zigzagging everywhere, then being redirected to another line just as they get near the front of their queue. Eventually I’m at the front, get my visa stamped and photo taken, grab my bags and I’m off through customs and out of the terminal into town …Bangkok, I’m here !

Leaving, on a jet plane …..

I’m leaving on a jet plane,
Don’t know when I’ll be back again

airport-1
That’s the view of my plane from the comfort of the Air New Zealand lounge, courtesy of Thai Airways. I did get upgraded to business class once before, but not until the boarding gate, so I did n’t get to enjoy all the benefits.
I’ve turned down the free breakfast though, because I know we will be getting fed soon enough in the air !
It’s not quite “All Black” in here, but it is rather black as you might expect from the Kiwis. Even the free WiFi coupons are black. It sure beats sitting in the chairs downstairs in the cattle class departure lounge !
Only another 10 hours or so to Bangkok ……..

Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life ….

I guess most of us have heard or read that title somewhere before, often on a motivational poster or similar ?
It is also more or less what I wrote just over a year ago, on my very first post. And, once again, tomorrow will be the first day of the rest of my life …well perhaps, depending on how things work out LOL.

Million star accommodation

Million star accommodation

Tomorrow I fly out to Thailand and a new life as an ‘expat’. A year ago I had a house, filled with possessions, a 4WD ute, and a job, now everything I own fits into 2 suitcases, a backpack, and a camera bag ! No house, no vehicle, no job, and no regrets, but plenty of memories already.
Memories of sleeping under the stars under a clear outback sky, or swimming with giant Whale Sharks and Manta Rays off Ningaloo Reef, and of rich red Pilbarra gorges and stunningly beautiful Kimberley waterholes and waterfalls. And the long outback roads and countless corrugations to get to them !
And 50kms later, it's still flat

And 50kms later, it’s still flat

Memories of stunning sunsets, of quirky roadside mailboxes, of outback oddities that make you think “WTF?” such as Gnomesville or the garden setting and assorted household items set on a sun-baked gibber plain along the Birdsville to Boulia road, and of outback icons such as the Birdsville races, to say nothing of sitting on the verandah of the legendary Birdsville pub with a can in hand, watching the sun set over the Simpson Desert.
GRR-2
Somebody asked me the other day what the highlight of the trip had been, I cannot really decide between the Kimberley, swimming with the Manta Rays, or finally getting to Birdsville for the races, something that had been on my to-do list for a long time.
Of course, it has not always been perfect, there have been some disappointments. Kakadu National Park, or should I say “Kakadon’t” would have to be top of that list. But the good times and the unexpected surprises far, far, outweighed the disappointments.
I’m sure that Thailand will also offer up pleasant surprises and it’s fair share of bad times, but I know that they will be different from Outback Australia !
So tomorrow morning I will be off to the airport and nearly 9 hours in a tin can, but at least I am flying business class this time thanks to all my frequent flyer points. I guess I should press “Publish” now and get to bed …I would n’t want to sleep in and miss my flight, would I ?
Catch you later …

Tall Ships on Sydney Harbour

Over the last few days Sydney has hosted a fleet of Tall Ships as part of the Royal Australian Navy’s “International Fleet Review”, and yesterday I went down to the harbour to take a few pics as they sailed off to New Zealand. Some were taken from the Opera House forecourt, and then I hopped on to the Manly ferry and caught up with them on their way out to sea. Unfortunately the wind was not co-operating, so most had to motor their way down the harbour, which was a pity …. it would have been nice to see them under full sail coming under the Bridge.

Hostel review : Collaroy Beach YHA, Sydney

collaroy-3
Just a quick review of the YHA hostel at Collaroy Beach, on Sydney’s northern beaches, where I stayed for a couple of weeks. It’s in a great location, just over the road from the beach, so it is very popular during the warmer weather. Perhaps a bit too popular, as it was very crowded at times, to the extent that just before I left they turned a TV lounge into an 8 bed dorm. I think that is perhaps going a bit too far ?
It seems to get 3 sorts of guests : group bookings from sporting and youth groups, long term residents, and newbies “just off the plane’ who have not yet learnt hostel etiquette about cleaning up after yourself ! Guys, you are not at home anymore, your mother is not here to clean up after you ! When the hostel is full it is not nice to have to eat at a table covered in other peoples’ mess. OK, whinge over …..
My room had 6 beds in it, but only 4 of us in there, it would be too crowded with all the beds in use. The kitchen was OK, just big enough most of the time (and if you did not want to cook there were plenty of restaurants close by).
A lot of the long term residents were working, and had their own cars, so parking was a bit tight sometimes but at least it has a car park, which is more than you can say about most city hostels.
There is a swimming pool, games room, tv lounge, they also have bikes and surfboards available.
So all in all, I would give it 7/10.
